Physical Support For Large Paintings

I've looked into what it might take to support better physical access to large work on canvas for either older painters or conservators. Here are the results.

This features a canvas seven feet square and caused me to wonder how Mark Rothko painted those giant paintings now housed at the DeMenil in Houston.

One of my imediate concerns is that it would take time to get off this scaffold to get back from detail work, and even then one would not be able to take in the whole picture as it develops. I have seen an elaborate easel that is counter-weighted and rigged to move the work to the artist, but was told that it costs more than $3,000.
