The Cupola

A client asked for a cupola design. Previously I had another client ask for a practical one to provide heat ventilation in a horse barn, but this one is intended to be primarily decorative. It will sit on a gardening shed that is 12' x 16'.

We started out large - by intuition only. I placed the main members of the frame down on the car port to help visualize it. At the end of the day we had a basic carcass in two by fours and wafer-board and the roof angle at three feet wide and five feet tall. After I was done the neighbor - a good friend of the client - suggested that this was far too large. I went about scaling it down and adding a decorative bed moulding under the roof cap.

I have a little more work to do on spacing the louvers equally.

I also had some time to watch some You Tube video on how the weather vane is mounted on an iron rod (1/2") and planned for mounting something similar onto a cross-brace.

The smaller size would be five feet total height and a little more than two feet wide.
